The World Soundtrack Awards announced their 2026 winners in Ghent on October 10. Daniel Pemberton was named Film Composer of the Year, Jeff Russo received the television equivalent and Hannah Peel won Discovery of the Year. The Public Choice Award went to Kevin Smithers for Soy Frankelda.
The wider list includes Trevor Jones for Lifetime Achievement, Nicolas Garcia for the game Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss, Margaret Hermant in the Belgian category, Xabier Doural García in the young-composer competition and Golden from KPop Demon Hunters for Best Original Song.
This is not one ranking divided into smaller trophies. The categories ask different questions, and that matters when the results become part of a composer’s professional story.
Composer of the Year is not Score of the Year
Pemberton’s award covers a body of recent work. The official announcement names Project Hail Mary, The Drama, The Bad Guys 2 and Masters of the Universe. The category covers a composer across several productions rather than declaring one isolated score superior to every alternative.
That changes what the result can support. An annual composer category may reflect range, sustained craft or the ability to build several distinct musical identities. The published definition does not describe a cue-by-cue ranking.
For producers, the award is a useful signal of current professional recognition. It does not replace watching the relevant films or asking whether the composer’s workflow, availability and production scale fit the next job.
The public vote measures a different relationship
Kevin Smithers’ Public Choice Award is attached to Soy Frankelda and determined through a vote open to the public. It does not use the same process as Film Composer of the Year, which is submitted and voted on by WSAcademy members.
An audience may respond to the complete film, its world, the memorability of its music or the visibility of the project. That does not make the award less meaningful. It identifies a different relationship between score and listener.
Placing the two results on one ladder would therefore be misleading. One award recognizes a composer across multiple works. The other highlights a nominated score through a vote open to the public.
Discovery means emerging, not necessarily a first credit
Hannah Peel received Discovery of the Year for Midwinter Break. The label can sound like a first professional appearance, but the official biography presents an artist, composer, producer and broadcaster with earlier screen credits.
The category explicitly targets emerging talent. Its rules include a ceiling of five commercially released feature films distributed in at least two countries. It therefore does not necessarily mean a first credit. This distinction matters because category titles often become compressed biographies in later coverage.
For the industry, the award highlights a career that still fits defined emergence criteria. It does not mean the career began at the ceremony.
Film, television and games use different systems
The awards separate film, television and games. Russo is Television Composer of the Year, while Garcia received the Game Music Award. Those categories acknowledge that the storytelling and production conditions are not interchangeable.
Episodic work may require continuity across chapters, recurring approvals and parallel delivery schedules. A game score can respond to states, transitions and player action. A film is generally composed for a fixed playback sequence, even when the cut remains fluid during post-production.
The voting methods differ too. Voting for the Game Music Award is open to the public, like the Public Choice Award, while Film Composer and Television Composer are submitted and voted on by WSAcademy members.
Many composers work across those boundaries. Separate categories do not deny that movement. They give the comparison more production context.
Song and score remain different forms of writing
Best Original Song went to Golden, written by Kim Eun-jae, Mark Sonnenblick, Joong Gyu Kwak, Yu Han Lee, Hee Dong Nam, Jeong Hoon Seo and Teddy Park, and performed by Huntrix.
The credit separates writers and performers precisely. That is useful in a screen-music awards list. A song carries lyrics, authorship, performance and a form that may travel beyond its scene. Underscore can operate more quietly inside editorial, dialogue and the final mix.
Both contribute to storytelling, but they are not evaluated through an identical production lens.
An awards list is a map, not a conclusion
The 2026 results become more useful when read as a set of lenses: a year of work, an audience-selected score, institutional discovery, a lifetime, a song, a national field and different media.
For directors and producers, awards can open a listening list. They cannot replace watching complete scenes, checking exact credits or discussing schedule, resources and deliverables with a potential collaborator.
The revealing part of the World Soundtrack Awards is not the idea of one universal winner. It is the category design, which makes several forms of musical achievement visible without pretending that they all describe the same thing.
